How to post a Classified Ad

How to post a Classified Ad

Posting Classified Ads is quick and easy for registered, logged-in users of the M&R Forums. Once you have registered for the Forums, you can post as often as you like, using your existing user account. Before you begin, be sure that you’ve logged-in using your username and password at the top of the page.
  1. Click on the Classified Ads tab in the main navigation bar at the top of the page.

  2. In the sub-navigation bar that appears below the main navigation bar, click on the Post Classified Ad link.

  3. The Add/Edit Classified Ad dialog will open on the page. The process is fairly straight-forward, with a list of descriptive terms on the right side for reference.

  4. Begin by selecting the type of ad you are going to post: For Sale, Wanted, or Auction. NOTE: You can't change this once you submit the ad, so be sure to make this selection correctly.

  5. Select the appropriate Category for your Ad from the pull-down menu.

  6. Provide a Title that is descriptive but brief. Be sure to include any important details that will help buyers find your ad. e.g.: Chameleon Manual Textile Press 6-color, 6-station w/ pallets.

  7. Enter the location information - specifically, the City and State your item is in or will ship from - this is important to the buyer when calculating shipping costs and delivery times.

  8. Enter the Details of the item in the editor window. Describe your item in detail. Be sure to note any special qualities or conditions that may help your sale, or defects or problems that the buyer should know about before bidding. This information can be edited at a later time if you wish to add or correct any information.

  9. Enter appropriate keywords in the Keywords field below the Details box. List keywords that describe your item (especially words that buyers might use when searching the Classified Ads). Use commas to separate your keywords, but no spaces.

  10. In the Financial Details area, enter the Asking Price in dollars (no cents), the item's rough Dimensions and Weight if applicable, whether it is new or used and what type of seller you are (generally most users will be an Individual, but resellers and distributors should use the Store designation to make it clear that they are not an individual).

  11. In the Other Information area, make a selection for Autopost - this generally will be left in the NO default, unless you are selling an item that is available in multiple quantities, like supplies or accessories. If the YES button is selected, then a new post will be made automatically using the same information as soon as a buyer clicks on the BUY IT button.

  12. In the same section, upload the main image for the item - this is the image that will appear in the thumbnail listings, and at the top of the item page when a buyer open the Ad. It should be the best representation of your product. Most standard image types are acceptable, up to 1000x1000 pixels. Click on the Browse button to select the file using a standard find file dialog box for your operating system, then navigate to the image on your computer's local hard drive.

  13. In the Shipping Options area, select the number of options you would like to provide, then enter the appropriate data for Carrier, Destination, Ships In (how long will it take to prepare the shipment), Rate and Fees paid by buyer or seller. This isn't an active calculator, but it is a way for you to provide sample shipping costs for freight shipments, and flat rate shipping costs for items that will ship by USPS, UPS or FED-EX.

  14. In the Payment Options area, use the pull-down menu to select the number of options you would like to provide, then enter the appropriate data in the Payment by, Details and Fees by fields.

  15. In the Photos to Upload are, you can upload as many as 5 JPG photos (1000x1000 pixels maximum resolution) to support the sale of your item. Additional images such as close-ups, features or additional included parts, etc. can be very helpful to the buyer in making a decision. If you intend to upload multiple images, use the pull-down menu to select the appropriate number, then click the Browse button to open your operating system's find file dialog box to navigate to the image you want to upload. Be sure to give the image a Title in the next field that helps describe what the buyer will see, otherwise it will simply read "untitled."

  16. In the Files to Upload area, you can upload as many as 5 files to support the sale of your item. Additional files might include PDF's of original brochures, equipment manuals, videos (under 10 MB) or other supporting documents that might help the buyer in making a decision. If you intend to upload multiple files, use the pull-down menu to select the appropriate number, then click the Browse button to open your operating system's find file dialog box to navigate to the file you want to upload. Be sure to give the file a title in the next field that helps describe what the buyer will see, otherwise it will simply read "untitled."

  17. Check that all of your data has been entered correctly and that your image and file attachments have been named, then click the Submit button at the bottom of the page. The system will upload your item description and file attachments. Be patient - if you have a number of attachments, this step could take some time.

Once the ad has been uploaded completely, the system will take you to a confirmation page to let you know that everything worked correctly. If this is your first post or you haven't set up a seller profile yet, the system will suggest you click on a link to complete your profile information. The Classified Section maintains an extended user profile so you can provide more information about yourself to your potential buyers or bidders. We recommend adding this data, as it makes buyers more comfortable with making a purchase or bid for your posted items. You can access this profile directly by clicking on the My Profile link that appears in the sub-navigation bar below the Classified Ads tab.

You can confirm your listing by clicking on the What's New? link in the sub navigation menu below the main navigation tabs while you're in the Classified Ads section, or by going to the home page, where your ad should appear in the Recent Classified Ads sidebar display.

When a buyer clicks the BUY IT link on your ad, you will receive a Private Message on the Forums site and, if you have the PM email notification enabled in your user profile, an email to your registered email address with the same message and instructions for completing the sale. Alternately, in your ad you can ask the buyer to contact you directly at a provided email or phone number.

When the BUY IT link is used and the transaction is completed using the Classified Ads system, it will track buyer and seller ratings and rankings based on number of sales and offer the opportunity to provide positive or negative feedback after transactions are completed.

At this time, there is no support for online payment, so arrangements need to be made directly with the buyer and seller - future implementations of the software are scheduled to gain this feature.
