Exclamation Please help. Ghosting/ Misalignment Issues on our Epson 4880

Recently I've encountered ghosting while printing from my 4880.
I've attached a couple of images highlighting the issue.
We're using MultiRip Software, on a Windows XP Machine.
When printing films fine points seem to have "split ends" and there is an inconsistent "ghost" around the tops and bottoms of what should be crisp vector art.
This happens when printing from Photoshop, and Illustrator.
The problem initially occurred when printing film in bi-directional mode, and was noticed when the screens we were burning from the film weren't usable. Afterwards we switched to printing in unidirectional mode, which solved the problem, until the ghosting was noticed on a film with fine lines.
After spending all day yesterday scouring the net for solutions, cleaning the head, sensor strip, & tracks, and running alignments, I noticed a couple of very small stray black dots near the top of each unidirectional alignment row.
I'm thinking this could what is causing the ghosting, because the alignment is pretty straight, and the ghosting appears to be more horizontally misaligned than vertical.
Has anyone encountered this before? Would it possible to fix this, and if so could you suggest any possible solutions? Films seem to burn fine when printing for now, but if it gets any worse...
Thank you for any help in advance, it's greatly appreciated!

It looks like these two pictures are two different problems to me.
I would try and fix the first problem by lowering the gap on your printer. You are probably printing in standard.
To fix the second problem I wouldn't allow pets around the printer anymore. It looks like you have some hair (pet hair is the worst) stuck in your machine. Start taking apart the housing so you can actually see what's inside there. It's easy to put the housing back.

I have seen both of these problems and these were the solutions to mine, they may not be to yours though.

I have been printing at the standard width.
Just tried printing the same image at the varying platen gap widths with no improvement.
There wasn't much of a difference really, except it getting slightly worse at the widest setting.
I don't think it is smudging because the 'ghost' is comprised of small dots when looking at it under a loupe.

Also, no animals have ever been around the printer, except for my partner... but he doesn't really use it.
It could be some type of dust, we do tend to get our fair share of that here.

Guess i have to start looking into taking it apart, so i can see what's happening underneath the head. I've looked inside the panels in the past, but never successfully taken them off.
